Repeated watchdog/exception reboots

Unit has been otherwise working okay since it was setup about three weeks ago, but I’m getting repeated hardware watchdog and exception resets. Can anyone advise on the stack trace?

The trace indicates that the unit has “yielded” to the lower level ESP8266 control layer. A WDT there usually means that the lower level WiFi is getting hung up and is typically associated with weaker WiFi. While I’ve seen plenty of units run just fine with an RSSI of -71 as in your case, they are usually using one of the recommended US channels of 1,6 or 11. You are using channel 2, which could have something to do with it. If possible, can you set your router (or AP) to use one of those preferred channels? If that doesn’t help, can you try to improve the RSSI?

Are the WDT and exception reboots related/one-in-the-same?

Regarding the RSSI, I have numerous zigbee devices in the house which occupy the same 2.4GHz band, thus 1)I leave the access point to channel-select automatically and 2)am avoiding adding additional access points so the zigbee devices don’t get completely stomped on. The iotawatt is obviously in a location I am otherwise not concerned about wifi.

An ethernet version would be a welcomed upgrade. Or dual band - though worse for RSSI, 2.4 is getting crowded these days.

At any rate I can add a second AP in the area with reduced power output in order to test. Will advise.

Added a 2nd AP, RSSI -54 now. Oddly had to disconnect the iotawatt from wifi and re-joint to force it to use the other AP (refused to connect to the closer, strong AP). I’ll follow up in a few days.

May not be the problem, but worth a try. The point where the WDT occurs is a vulnerable position just after 16.6 ms of sampling. It doesn’t happen every time, in fact a MTBF of 24 hours suggests it happens on average once every 3,000,000 times. The pending firmware release “feeds” the WDT after each sample before yielding to the core, so I think that may help when it’s released.

There is no integrity issue with restarting even as frequently as every hour as the restart only takes several seconds. There is a downside that it fills up the message log. So you can try assigning a non-overlapping channel (1,6,11) or just wait for the next release.

I have not tried moving to ch2. While I understand it’s a data point, worth trying, and useful to you for troubleshooting, it is ultimately not a solution. Detrimental to the device or not I don’t believe repeated watchdogs or exceptions are acceptable.

Looking back over this, you added another AP, yet the channel did not change. Are both APs using the same channel 2? That would be a problem.

You don’t want to use one of the non-overlapping channels. OK, Sure you can return it. What was your order number?

No, both AP’s are set to auto. With all the other 2.4G in the house they settle on ch 10 and ch 2, never overlapping.

By RMA I was implying an exchange/it is a hardware problem, because I don’t get the impression this has been an issue before? If firmware or ESP module related I can’t be the only one with issue? What is the target date for firmware release?
