Delivery times to Australia

Been busy looking up delivery times for my order but it seems to of stalled at my destination airport.

Can any other aussies care to share delivery times?

I understand COVID has rocked spare air freight capacity worldwide, but it’s strange it’s sitting in no mans land, with no updates from Australia Post (who USPS uses for the local delivery)

There are several packages of your vintage that track as sitting in Perth. Sadly, four weeks is par for the course these days to Australia and Perth seems to be taking a bit longer. It’s the luck of the draw. Seems packages arriving through Sydney fare better.

It’s also possible that the package is moving but the tracking is not being updated. I’ve had users report that they received an order that never shows as delivered in the tracking. I don’t know if it’s a failure of the Australian post or the USPS.

It may be one or two more weeks.

Ordered 28/4/20
Arrived 26/5/20

Sat in USA->AUS no-mans land for ages… sit tight It’ll get there!

And low and behold it turned up today. Phew. busy weekend coming up for me…

Thanks to those who waited patiently for the backlog to clear. Things seem to be getting back near normal now.

I am disappointed that I have not heard from the few impatients who demanded and received a refund and now seem to have taken delivery.

Mine took abt 5 weeks. Happy in current environment.

I’ve finally received my iotawatt in Brisbane, Australia. (Fortunately it’s my second unit, so I didn’t mind waiting for the postal system… well, I didn’t mind as much!)

The short answer is it was ordered and posted the next day, 22-July-2020, and arrived here today, 15-Sep-2020. I think the package had a few naps on the way…

Longer answer:

I post this so anyone else ordering can have realistic timeframes in mind, given the effect COVID-19 seems to be having on the postal systems all over the world.

Looking forward to setting this one up soon… we recently moved to 3 phase and a decently large solar PV system, so this 2nd Iotawatt is going to be the 3 phase monster monitor

Edit - I forgot to note that if you plot out the package’s travels on a map, it strangely went via Perth, Australia, and sat there for basically a month. I guess it was warm and dry… thanks for that, Australia Post :frowning:

This is a typical Australian shipping experience. About six weeks with the package sitting in Perth for several weeks. Pre-Covid was 2-3 weeks and they went direct rather than via Hong-Kong.

I’ve been working with UPS to get discounts on international packages. There are still some logistics to work out but it looks like I’ll soon be able to offer about 2 week service to Australia for around $50-$60. Similar rates should be available to other parts of the world as well.

The shipping delays to Australia seem to be getting worse.

I can only guess at the holdup. It looks like everything is going through Hong Kong now. My guess is that due to lack of capacity on commercial airlines, they are shipping to HongKong by ocean freight. Once it gets to Australia, there’s a whole new set of delays with Australia Post.

Delivery used to take about two weeks. Those days are gone. USPS Priority International or even Priority International Express does not improved the situation significantly.

In response top this I have negotiated decent rates with UPS and they have been available on the website for a few weeks now. Typical package to Australia costs about $50-$60 USD but gets there in about a week.

The website has transparent about these shipping delays for months, but even though things are slow, so far everything has eventually made it.

Australia is a very active IoTaWatt market, so I’d like top improve the situation. One option is to sub-out fulfillment to a local service. I’m looking into that. One big question that I have is what the import duties are? Are there duties on the current packages? If so, what is the rate?

Hi Bob, The current situation with International fulfilment is that orders under $1000 don’t incur the local 10% GST. If you were to use local fulfilment that company would need to collect the 10% GST and pass it on to the tax department.

I can understand that if the Hong Kong warehouse is filling up the warehouse manager would need to clear out the warehouse by shipping the backlog. I hope that I don’t get another round of delays although the Australia Post update does say that the package is in Perth ‘awaiting clearance’.

Australia post told me that you can trust the USPS tracking site as they just put in estimate dates. With my package they got the package around 2 weeks after USPS claimed it was there.

A wise man once told me “The blame has no home”.

Very true but I get where they are coming from if it is true.

If someone makes up a story and everyone else has to answer for it isn’t ideal

My understanding of how the tracking works is that international packages are aggregated by port of entry to the destination country. They are placed into some type of shipping container be it an airline cargo container, a traditional cargo container, or just a big crate. That entity is assigned a tracking number and all of the composite packages are linked to that.

From then on, the container is tracked, not the individual packages. It is scanned into and off of airplanes, ships, and trucks. That scan updates the status of the individual packages in the USPS system.

If one of those containers is delivered to say, Perth port of entry, the master tracker is scanned and reported to USPS, and the package shows as arrived in Perth in the USPS tracking.

Sometime later, and we are talking about that time interval, the container is opened in Perth and the individual packages are scanned into the Australian (or whatever country) tracking system. That is the point where the individual package tracking number appears to have arrived.

So a postal employee in Australia, when given an individual package tracking number may not see it in their system, yet it can be sitting in an unprocessed container in a dock or airport warehouse.

Conspiracy theories are rife. Does anyone seriously think the USPS is conspiring to misinform the public about the whereabouts of package that cost $20 to send nearly 12,000 miles? They all get there eventually and they couldn’t care less how long it takes. There is no delivery guaranty.

The Morriscum government changed those rules.
Now technically everything (should) incur the 10% GST
Ebay have included the 10% GST at checkout for a long time now, but privately imported gear usually sneaks in under the radar.

Just what they claimed. I questioned it too but they held fast on it. Who knows to be honest. Finally gets there just need to allow 6 weeks as stated

For anyone reading and considering an order, I used the UPS option and got it door-to-door in 9 days. 5 of those were between the time it cleared customs and arrived at my door. Cleared customs on a Saturday, and I got it the following Friday.
