Getting Green Red Red Green LED sequence - Resolved

Was in the process of setting up my new IotaWatt when I started getting the GRRG led sequence. When I open the setup page I get the following error: configuration parse failed: JSON.parse: unexpected end of data at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data. I have not actually hooked any CT up yet, just trying to get the config figured out. I’m at a complete loss as to what to do here.

Dave

Hi Dave,
That sequence indicates there is a format error in your config.txt file. Not a common problem but should be easy to fix. Since you are just starting setup, it’s probably easier to just load a fresh config.txt than to recover the old one. These are the steps:

  1. Download this generic config file config.txt (610 Bytes)

  2. Run the setup app and navigate to “Tools” -> “File Manager and Editor”.

  3. In the upper left of the file manager clock the “Browse” button and using the file selection method of your browser, select and open the config.txt file downloaded in step 1.

  4. Now click the “Upload” button.

Restart your IoTaWatt and refresh your browser window.

So far so good. Trying to reenter all my inputs. What does it mean for the LED to go from dim green to bright green and back again?

As long as it’s glowing continuously it’s fine. The LED is connected to one of the two digital converters, so intensity is dependent on which one is being used more. Also, you may see it go solid green when you save something in the configuration.

Finished setting up the inputs and outputs again. Same blink pattern is occurring.

OK,

With the setup utility, can you navigate to “Tools” -> “Message Log” and post the displayed log please?

I think I finally got it in. However I seem to be having a problem with my network connection which may be the root problem here. I’m on a UVERSE network and my router supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi radio connections. I had a problem with my wireless printer some time ago that was a result of some kind of conflict so I just hardwired my printer in to the router to solve that problem. Not sure exactly how to solve the connectivity issue here. I’ve been turning off the 5GHz connection and it seems to work for a while. You still want the message log?

Is your unit still blinking G_R_R_G?

No. It just flashing dim/bright green.

Did you mean G-R-R-G or the blink pattern?

It is no longer flashing GRRG. It is alternating between bright and dim Green right now.

OK. Sounds like it’s working.

Yes, I would like to see the message log to see your WiFi signal strength and generally look for anything abnormal. This does sound like a WiFi problem. Regarding what you can do, given that you report other problems unrelated to IoTaWatt, is to get a new router.

I have my own router. It supports 2.4GHz and 5 GHz and I also have switches with wired connections. But I don’t use the cable modem router. I simply have that set to pass through everything to my router, which gives me greater control and also means I can switch ISP with minimal hassle. Just move the RJ45 to the new modem.

With your own router, you are not limited to locating it where the cable or fiber comes in. The modem needs to be there, but then you run a single ethernet cable to the best location for the router.

WiFi appears to be OK. Would rather see channel 6 but 1 is OK. Signal strength is good.

I don’t see any problems after the new config was loaded. No indication why the restarts were done, but no harm either. Monitoring and logging seems to be working fine.

Just to formally close this out, I finally figured out what the problem was here. I run an old version of Firefox on one of my computers that I was using to access my IoTaWatt. It appears this version is not compatible with the IoTaWatt interface. I accessed the device on a different computer with a current version of Firefox loaded and everything works perfectly. I have another question but I’ll start a different thread.
