Iottawatt going offline

Recently my iottawatt has started going offline, can be as frequently as once per day

When this happens, the gui is unreachable, but i can still ping the device on my network. Power cycling it fixes it everytime

That’s a pretty old unit. It’s not going offline. The message comes from the IoTaWatt because it cannot locate the app on the SDcard. My best guess is that given the age of the unit, the SDcard should be replaced.

You can try to copy the contents of your old card to the new, thus preserving your config and history. If that doesn’t workl, reformat the new card and follow these steps:

I would also recommend that you clear the “upload history from” date in your PVoutput setup. It’s taking hours to catch up after reboot because you are a free-loader and trying to upload redundant history.

I think i’ve only been using this since mid-2022, the only record i can find in my email was when i purchased a CT from Smart Guys in July 2022. This was when i had my Tesla charger installed and the iottawatt installer at this time.

I haven’t replaced the sd card yet

What i did recently though was move the unit so that it was positioned better in my fuse box, this resulted in slightly better wifi signal and it made it easier to get to when it went offline. I also adjusted the wifi channel and power output and enabled 'Enhanced IoT Connectivity in my unifi controller. After making the above changes the unit had been online from Dec 7 - 27th

The above was of course all misleading, i now believe the issue is that the device does not automatically reconnect to wifi after a power outage. This morning we had a brief power outage where the power was outbriefly. This was not long enough to affect the wifi as this runs off the ups in my server rack. but the iottawatt went offline at this time and did not come back on until i power cycled it this morning around 5:50am. I’m sorry but i didnt observe what the light was doing, but i think the activity led was off (was still waking up)

Went offline again. This time there was no corresponding power event, device was pingable the whole time and still showed as online in WLAN Controller.

Just to add, when replacing the sd card, i copied the contents of config.txt using the built in file manager.

Rebuilt sdcard using the instructions online and then replaced the contents of config.txt

Still looks like an SDcard problem.

You did a bunch of restarts on the 29th, mostly too short to connect to WiFi. The last one at 9;50z (20:50 local) never finished. I suspect it could not read the config and set there blinking GRRG until you restarted it the next day at 5:51 local. Assuming it ran OK after that restart.

Those restarts were likely me getting everything put back together in the fuse box. It did run completely fine until last night, the 31st before it went offline again. Brand new sdcard.

This micro usb has always been a little bit loose, so when reconnecting i need to put a small amount of tension on the cable to get a solid connection, so sometimes this causes a couple of on/off events as im connecting it

Brief power outage again, just under 8mins, error code G, R, R, G. Device remained offline until power cycled

This thread doen’t tell the whole story. You’ve sent me emails with other information. Most notably on Dec 31:

What appears to be happening is that the unit resets and cannot access the SDcard or has a lot of errors while doing so. That might be consistent with an unreliable DC power source. Potentially, the SDcards are getting damaged. In any event, I suspect its going to keep happening and there is nothing I can do about it. It’s not a firmware issue.

I realize a new unit is hard to come by in Australia, but that would be my recommendation.

I did email regarding the loose usb port but this was over a year ago when i first installed it and was having issues, certainly not on Dec 31
