New Install - Wi-Fi Constantly Disconnecting

Hi,

I have just installed my new IotaWatt V5 Firmware version 02_05_12 device. Unfortunately, I am having severe issues with the wi-fi constantly dropping – connecting – disconnecting – connecting – disconnecting etc. Occasionally the system will stay connected for maybe 10 minutes then drops and constantly tries to re-connect then drops etc.

The router that I am using is a LinkSys WRT32X with DDWRT installed - Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r44483 std (10/02/20).

I have given the IotaWatt a reserved IP address of – 192.168.1.10 and have tried different wi-fi channels with no improvement in connection duration.

I have other wi-fi devices running on this router without any issue. Very close to the IotaWatt is a Nest thermostat which works perfectly.

Any help would be most appreciated as I can’t wait to have it up and running.

Not much that can be done from a firmware perspective. The RSSI i on the borderline in the high -70’s and in the danger zone when it connected on channel 9 in the low -80’s. As an experiment, can you move it closer to the router with just the USB power and AC reference transformer to see what the RSSI is and if it stays connected. The radios in the ESP8266 are not the most powerful, and typically require stronger signals to operate without problems.

Therefore the options for fixing the constant disconnecting are to either locate the IotaWatt closer to your router or add an extender to your network.

Once you’ve chosen ESP8266, then board layout is important in how well the radio operates.

I apologise for the delayed response in answering your reply but I do not keep very well. I recently suffered three mini-strokes (T.I.A.’ s) and this has left me finding it very hard to deal with normal life never mind any kind of complicated issue.

Unfortunately, the unit was installed by a qualified electrician and because of my illness I am unable to move the IotaWatt closer to the router as you requested.

I was very dismayed by your comment regarding the wi-fi chip:-

If this is the case the poor wi-fi performance should have been pointed out on the website to allow customers to make an informed decision about the technical merits of the device.

I would have happily paid more money for a much stronger higher quality chip.

You could have included an external antenna option in your V5 design.

A test of the wi-fi signal strength (08/04/21@16.30hrs) with two different analysers was carried out at the location of the IotaWatt with the following results:-

This indicates to me that the signal received by the device is somehow being attenuated.

Unfortunately, there are no options for the ESP8266. It is what it is. They work much better with an RSSI below 70.

I am afraid it is not as simple as boxing the device up and you refunding the full purchase price.

Currently, I have incurred the following charges:-

IotaWatt Hardware Costs: $262.20
Worldwide Express (UPS): $68.85
UPS - Government Charges: $65.83
UPS - Brokerage Charges: $15.79
Electrician Install Costs: $144.24
VAT: $28.84

Total Cost: $585.75

The above does not include return postage charges.

It would not be practical to return the unit unless you were willing to refund all of the above costs. Plus, there would be additional electrician charges for removal of the IotaWatt device and all of the CT’s.

However, given the circumstances and inconvenience caused I would be willing to accept a $100 refund as a gesture of goodwill which would be put towards a much better router capable of a stronger wi-fi signal.

The poor wi-fi performance of the ESP8266 chipset must be made clear on the website. It should be stated that the IotaWatt energy monitoring device may not work with an RSSI above -70 dBm.

If this is acceptable, when the refund is confirmed I will go ahead and purchase a new router and will let you know the outcome at some point early next week.

It’s a leap from “not the most powerful” to “poor WiFi performance”. You see what you want to see I suppose.

From Wikipedia:

There is no standardized relationship of any particular physical parameter to the RSSI reading. The 802.11 standard does not define any relationship between RSSI value and power level in milliwatts or decibels referenced to one milliwatt (dBm). Vendors and chipset makers provide their own accuracy, granularity, and range for the actual power (measured as milliwatts or decibels) and their range of RSSI values (from 0 to RSSI maximum).[2] One subtlety of the 802.11 RSSI metric comes from how it is sampled—RSSI is acquired during only the preamble stage of receiving an 802.11 frame, not over the full frame.[3]

The internet has made everyone an expert on everything. Notwithstanding the lack of standardized definition of RSSI, you would be hard pressed to find any advice concerning a Wifi device that states that RSSI greater than -70 is fine.

I’m not going to buy you a new router because you have -75 to -82 RSSI. Besides, you don’t necessarily need a new router, just a $25 range extender. (No, I’m not going to buy you one of those either).

I was not asking you for a new router, I said I would go ahead and purchase one with a stronger wi-fi as an option to try and resolve the situation for the both of us with the least amount of cost as I have a considerable amount of cash tied up in this device.

I explained to you about my very poor health and therefore do not consider your comments very helpful or productive.

As you can imagine I was very disappointed in your response.

Given the considerable amount of money that I have invested in your product, I find your comments distasteful and degrading.

Currently I am in a position of having an IotaWatt energy monitor which is not working as described on your website.

This devices unreliable wi-fi performance is clearly a breach of merchantability – NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.

There is no mention about wi-fi connectivity problems in the setup documentation or in the troubleshooting guide. Nowhere does it state that this device will not connect or may give you issues if your RSSI is greater than -70 dBm.

This is clearly misrepresentation of a device which only offer’s wi-fi connection but no LAN port.

The wi-fi performance clearly would be a mitigating factor in deciding if this was the energy monitor for your home.

So basically, if you purchase this and your wi-fi has any kind of signal issue - this unit would be totally useless.

It is also abundantly clear from your attitude that the customer does not come first.

If you are unwilling to help, I will contact PayPal and advise them of the situation and the zero-customer service and have them reverse the payment and cancel the transaction.
