3 Red Flashes - Panic Mode

Hey Bob,

My 2nd IOTAWATT has been flakey for some time. Dropping off the network and unable to be contacted.

I initially put it down to poor network coverage as it is in the basement of our home with the switchboard.

I recently replaced our wifi with a mesh system and placed a mesh repeater in the basement to give better coverage.

I reconfigured the IOTAWATT to connect to that mesh network and it is showing as a good strong signal

I did this change about a week ago and have still been experiencing the same issues - the IOTAWATT stop responding after a period of time.

I have since moved the USB power supply to a new powerboard (this runs off a business grade UPS)

I then replaced the USB power supply and cable and the problem still persists.

It happened yesterday and i powered the unit on and then off and it has happened again this morning

I’m seeing an issue with possible invalid response from Emoncms, but where do the three red flashes come in?

Each time i lose communication with the unit - i go and have a look at it and it is sitting there with th 3 red flashes.

I have had the same thing happen tonight - just restarted it and it has not come back yet - i will go down stairs and check it out.

If you are seeing an issue with EMONCMS - happy to disable that for the time being.

OK just forced another restart (removed power cable) as it was not responsive.

The LED patter ws 1 green and two red flashes - after two power downs it came back up

Just went in and deleted the ECONCMS definition and did a reboot from the web manager.

It came back - then went in and started deleted the Influx uploads definitions - deleted all the defined outputs and then did a reboot - but could not remove the actual INflux server defintiion - each time i did it just jumped back to the main menu.

It appears to have locked up again now.

Here is the message log now after a couple of times of pulling the power plug

The green LED appears to have a fast flicker or fading in and out (just slightly) almost like a dodgey power supply etc - but i have already replaced all of that chain

Is it possible that GRR has been the problem all along?

Thats not what i have observed each time i have been down there to reset it.

That seems to have stood out to me just now.

What does that pattern signify ?

GRR is associated with SDcard problems. RRR, as a catchall, can be the result of inability to open the datalog. There is a log entry made when that is the case, but if its caused by inability to access the SDcard, the message will not make it top the log.

Do you have another SDcard? 8GB or more, format FAT32.

Yep i have got a couple on hand and that was the next stop.

Am i just going to format them to FAT32 and then copy all files across - or do i need to image the existing card onto the new one ?

As i have now deleted the EMONCMS definition and stop the influx uploads i will leave this overnight (3AM here now) and tackle the SD card replacement in the morning if i have another lockup.

Also how do i rename the devices - as soon as i go into the Setup/Device field and put the cursor into the Device name field and type anything - the message i get is please match the requested format ?

What is the requested format ?

I usually just reference them both by IP Addresses as they have a fixed IP through my firewall DHCP server through their Mac addresses - but would be nice to be able to change it

Yes.

I’ll answer this later.

There is a possibility that the SDcard issue is with the holder on the IoTaWatt PCB. Given its Australia lets go for the easy fix first and see what happens.

OK still running OK this morning after removing the EMONCMS and disabling the Influx config

Will report back in a couple of days.

If it does lock up i have a spare SD card standing by (I assume it is a micro SD ?)

Yes, micro SD. The GRR would not have had anything to do with Emoncms. It’s in the mix with the exception restarts.

OK it hung up again today before i got to it.

Doing it now.

The windows copy of the SD Card is hanging at 78% when it hits IOTAlog.log and also the history log

I have created two blank files with those names on the new card

Will setup the new card now and see what happens

Update

Continues to run just fine - definitely either a dodgey card or corrupt files.

Not sure what your failure rate is like on the cards Bob - but i have been using Sandisk Extreme Pro units in Raspberry Pis - for a looooong time (many of them out there for customers (like 100+) and never had a single failure.

My personal preference for high endurance microSD cards are Samsung’s. I use these in all of my Wyze Cameras with continuous recording enabled. I also use them in my Raspberry Pi computers. Very reliable and designed for continuous write cycles.

Hey Bob,

I thought everything was fine with my unit after the replacement of the SD card but it appeared to have done a hard lockup today when i went to access it.

To summarise

Move the USB power supply to a different power outlet
replaced the USB power supply and USB cable
replaced the SD card - deleted the log files - as they were corrupted and would not copy
removed the definition for EMONCMS

I could not access the unit through the web interface today (had not attempted to for a couple of days previously) - the unit is still out of its case after replacing the SD card so i went to the basement and the onboard LED on the ESP module (that you would not normally see with the case on - was flashing a fast blue.

I have powered it off and on and here are the message logs
