IotaWatt keeps rebooting -- stopped sending data to EmonCMS and PVOutput

Hi Team.

2 days ago i noticed that my PVOutput consumption data had dissapeared. I power cycled the iotawatt, and it started flowing back in again.

The same thing happened 6 hours later, and it hasnt pushed any data to either for the last 48 hours.

I have tried to login this morning to see whats happening, and I am getting a configuration not found error on iotawatt.
I power cycled it again and it still doesnt seem to be pushing data anywhere … .and the status screen isnt updating - it shows the values on first load and doesnt refresh

I cant even seem to get the message log to load.

Im not sure what else to do from a troubleshooting point of view.

It is trying to download an auto-update release but appears to be failing and restarting. Where are you located and are you experiencing problems with slow internet lately?

Hi.

Im in Sydney, and no internet has been fine - I have 100mb connection.

Overnight the Iotawatt must have done its update, as the status screen is working as expected now – however its still not feeding data into emoncms or pvoutput.

No, it didn’t, that log shows it still restarting.

The 100mb connection is between you and your ISP, the last mile. My server is in Virginia, USA. There is no useful terrestrial bandwidth across Asia, so you are traveling undersea, probably from China or Japan to the US west coast then across the continent to my server.

You are not the first to report problems with bandwidth to the USA. A lot of stuff is cached there, and I do use cloudflare, but apparently it’s not delivering this update to you locally.

The trace definitely shows it is taking too long to download the release. If you can get the config utility to run, try switching to auto-update MAJOR to settle it down. If you can get there, I can show you how to download the release manually and install it.

With your browser, can you go to
https://iotawatt.com/firmware/bin/02_05_07.bin
and specify download? See if how long it takes.

I just manually downloaded the update in a browser. Took all of 4 seconds.

I have changed it to MAJOR updates for the moment.

Re internet – im currently working from home and have had a number of international video conferences with my head office in Atlanta and havent noticed any issues there either.

Great, your system should be stable now (not restarting).

Change the auto-update class to NONE.
Run the file manager.
Check to see if your system has a directory called download.
Click browse in the upper left, locate the downloaded 02_05_07 file and select it.
/02_05_07 should now be in the path box on the top line.
add the directory name “download” before the slash so it reads download/02_05_07.bin
Press Upload
After a few seconds, refresh the window and expand the download directory, you should see 02_05_07.
Open a new browser tab and type the url: http://192.168.1.49/update?release=02_05_07
Enter and wait a minute for the release to install.
Go back and refresh the config program. It should be running 02_05_07.

If all that goes OK, just hang tight as release 02_05_08 is just a few days away. You don’t want to go through restarts again. When I publish it is available for MINOR, download with your browser and install as above.

the 02_05_07 file was already there – i replaced it anyway and did the release process and now i am up to date.
Does that suggest its not so much an issue with the download as such ?

EmonCMS has data now — PVOutput doesnt, even though i can see that the iotawatt seems to be connecting to it.

That was probably a partial file. Thetrace was pretty clear that it was hung up downloading the release file. I get your point about internet bandwidth. Perhaps it is a problem with the cloud flare cache, really not much to go on. I have seen this before but mostly from Australia.

I would need to see the message log and a screenshot of the status display with the PVoutput tab expanded in order to look at that problem.

It all seemed to settle down after a while
Eventually PVOutput said it was stopped. Clicked start and everything is fine.

Im having a similar experience. I have two devices and they have both stopped working. LED go G-R-G-R for about 15s, then the led flashes quickly like its doing something and then back to the R-G-R-G cycle. The whole cycle takes about 30s.
Im based in Wellington NZ and have 100Mb fibre connection. Im having trouble to connect to get any logs or make any changes to the settings.

I am in the exact same boat here. about 12 hours ago data stopped coming in and the device has been in a loop of rebooting. Same thing as the others have reporting its trying to upgrade from 02_05_07 to 02_05_08. I am also in Australia (which seems to be common thing here as well).

I have tried following the steps detailed in this post, however by the time i get access to the web page and try to change auto update from MINOR to MAJOR the device has rebooted before i can save it. I’ve been trying and trying but cant get it to save before a reboot. Any advice on where i go from here?

Just keep trying, Ive just got one of mine to save on “None” for the update and its now back online. So I think its just luck if you can change the seeting and save before it restarts.

Still trying to get my 2nd unit working…

Thanks mate, I ended up getting it just now - had to really spam that save button. Once i got it to ‘None’ it stopped rebooting and was able to follow the instructions.

This is a recent development that so far only seems to be a problem down under. It is caused by excessive delay in downloading the large release file. I can make changes going forward to allow more time for the download, but that doesn’t help anyone with this release, and there will be a catch-22 installing a new release to fix this.

It does appear to something new, possibly related to changes to the Cloudflare cache.

Checking the Cloudflare stats suggests this is an ongoing problem in Australia and New Zealans, but no evidence of unusual activity elsewhere in the world.

At the root of the problem is a 30 second watchdog timer that is triggered by an excessive download time for a new release. This was introduced with release 02_05_02 and so now updating from 02_05_02 is a problem. While MINOR users are now just encountering it, there are quite a few ALPHA and BETA users there and they have not reported this during the last three months as several subsequent releases have been pushed to those update classes.

So I think it’s something relatively new and only down-under. I will increase that watchdog time significantly in the next release, but for the immediate problem that is not a solution.

I have turned off the Cloudflare cache fir the release files, which is counter-intuitive, but I’m not convinced it was caching them in the first place based on cache hit statistics. I will follow up on that soon.

In the meantime, if anyone notices that it starts working again, please advise ASAP. Next week, I’m going to publish a custom release for you that will have the extended WDT interval. I’ll ask that you install it manually and then try to auto-update to 02_05_08 as a test and to see what the actual download time is.

UPDATE: There was an issue with the cloudflare CDN cache where the .bin files were not being cached. I have resolved that and tested with a VPN presence in Brisbane. The download now hits on the cache.

If any of you are could download the 02_05_08.bin file with a browser and the JS debugger avtive for network to verify that the response header “cf-cache-status” is “HIT”, if you get “MISS” please try a second time as the cache should then be primed. Specifically, there is a problen if cf-cache-status is DYNAMIC. If someone could post back their results, it would be helpful.
